“Three housekeepers have lost their jobs. One gardener was accused of theft and dismissed. None of them were guilty.”
I felt anger rising inside me.
The poor workers had been punished for things they never did.
Then I reached the next paragraph.
“Last month, I installed hidden cameras in several parts of the house without informing anyone.”
My eyes widened.
Suddenly, everything started making sense.
“I have now seen enough to know the truth.”
The note ended with an instruction.
“Take this letter and come to my lawyer’s office immediately. Do not call me. Do not return to the house. My lawyer is expecting you.”
An address was written at the bottom.
For several minutes, I sat motionless inside the car.
Part of me thought it had to be some kind of mistake.
Another part feared I was being dragged into a family battle that had nothing to do with me.
But curiosity eventually won.
After handing over the Mercedes to the mechanic, I took a bus to Victoria Island and found the lawyer’s office.
The receptionist seemed to be expecting me.
“Mr. Chinedu?” she asked.
I nodded.
“Please come with me.”
A few moments later, I was seated inside a large office across from an elderly lawyer wearing gold-rimmed glasses.
Without saying much, he opened a laptop and turned the screen toward me.
“Madam Adebayo asked me to show you this.”
Desperate to support my family and keep food on the table, I took a job working as a driver for a wealthy widow.
