If the person is NOT breathing normally or not breathing at all: Place them face up on a firm surface.
Begin CHEST COMPRESSIONS: Kneel beside them, place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest (between the nipples), and the other hand on top. With your arms straight, compress hard and fast, allowing the chest to fully recoil between compressions.
Rate: At a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute (you can follow the rhythm of the Bee Gees’ song “Stayin’ Alive”).
Do not stop compressions until professional help arrives with a defibrillator (AED) or the person responds.
If you are trained and there is more than one rescuer, you can alternate compressions with rescue breaths (30 compressions: 2 breaths).
Guidelines for Proper and Safe Use: Time is Muscle: Delay is the enemy. Every minute that passes without blood flow causes more heart tissue to die. Acting quickly saves lives and reduces serious complications.
